Reasons To Go To The Ngapeke Kākāriki Market

The Ngapeke Kākāriki Market was created by the Ngapeke 7 Trust as a vehicle for local whanau to sell produce they have grown and products they have handcrafted. It is also the opportunity for the local community to visit the Trust’s project Ngapeke Permaculture to see all the amazing work the permaculture team have been doing over the past couple of seasons.

Ngapeke Permaculture is a project that is involves locals and whanau to realise the full potential of the whenua and it’s surroundings including the community around it. It is creating a way of life that works with the environment and not against it.

The Permaculture Project started in 2019 with the area adjacent to Kaiwha Road which had previously been in maze. A teaching garden was established around the utility shed and was used to run the Kai Oranga course in partnership with Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi. Fast forward to 2022 the Permaculture Project has extended it’s reach in terms of converting the whenua from monoculture crops to a food forest and the number of whanau who are now participating in the activities on the whenua is rapidly increasing too.

Now to the reasons you should visit the Ngapeke Kākāriki Market this weekend

Matariki!!

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars, that rises in midwinter and for many Māori, heralds the start of the new year. For the first time in Aotearoa, it will officially be celebrated as a rā whakatā ā-ture (public holiday) on the 24th of June 2022. It is an opportunity for all people of Aotearoa to come together and reflect on the tau (year) that has passed, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

Each star in the cluster has a name and is a kaitiaki of a different aspect of the natural world.
